TOUR PLAN

01

DAY 1.- PUERTO MALDONADO / LODGE AT TAMBOPATA / JUNGLE WALKING / SPOTTING CAIMAN.

We will start at 9:45 am. We can pass to pick you up from your hotel, bus station or airport. We will have a 2-hour car ride (taxi) until we get to the Tambopata River near the limit of the Tambopata National Reserve. Our boat will be waiting for us to take us 25 minutes upstream the Tambopata River to get to our lodge, near to Chuncho Clay Lick. We will have good chances to spot capybaras and many shore birds along the river bank. Getting to the lodge, we will get a welcome drink and the manager will explain to us all we need to know about our lodge and its surroundings.

After lunch we will go for an introductory walk, first in a secondary growth forest and then in a primary forest full of huge trees, medicinal plants, ornamental plants, lianas, etc. At the same time, we will talk about the most important economic activities of this region. By the way, we also have chances to spot Howler Monkeys, wild pigs “peccaries”, some Brown capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and wildlife in general.

When it is getting dark, we will come back to our lodge to get our torch and go to our boat, and we will do one of the most exciting activities… it will be Cayman spotting. We will go to look for White and black Caymans (“alligators”) along the river bank with a big spotlight. We might see more capybaras, and we always have good chances to spot an ocelot or a jaguar along the river bank.

DAY 2 .- CHUNCHO MACAW CLAY LICK / LUNCH / MAMMAL CLAY LICK / NIGHT WALKING.

We will wake up around 5:00 am. We will get a tea or coffee to get some energy and we will take our boat upstream the Tambopata River for 1 hour, crossing the check point. We will have the sunrise just for us in the boat, and we will have really good chances to spot capybaras (which is the largest rodent worldwide), tapir, and you could even see the most beautiful feline in South America – “The Jaguar”. Many of our clients are witnesses with photographic evidence of encounters with this beautiful mammal. I like to say it, we have a 20% probability to see one of these guys by the river bank.

Getting to our destination, The Tambopata clay lick, we will take a seat as close as we are allowed and we will get a show at the clay lick: parrots and macaws – green, red, blue and yellow birds all around us, flying and making loud noises. It will be spectacular – this behavior of these birds. We will explain to you the reason why every day the whole year around these birds go to the cliff to eat clay. We will spend from 6:30 am to 11:00 am approximately. Our breakfast will be in front of the Tambopata clay lick excursion.

At the end of this excursion, we will come back to our lodge to enjoy an unforgettable swimming in the stream or maybe in the Tambopata River. We will have our lunch and then we´re going to repack to come back to Puerto Maldonado to go after that to Sandoval Lake. We´re going to take our boat and go downstream the Madre de Dios River up to the Sandoval Lake port. From here we´ll walk for 2 miles or 3 kilometers through the Tambopata National Reserve, up to the place where we are going to take a rowing canoe for 30 minutes to get to our lodge.

We leave after dinner. We´ll go to make a short night walk through primary forest.

DAY 3 PUERTO MALDONADO / NATIONAL RESERVE TAMBOPATA / SPOTTING WILD LIFE.

A pre-dawn wake-up call will enable us to be on the lake for sunrise and a hopeful encounter with the family of Giant Otters who frequent the lake and are most active at this time of day. Sandoval Lake offers abundant wildlife including over 40 species of birds resident to its lake margins. Most of the fish-eating water birds around the lake actively fish in the early morning as well, and this outing should provide excellent views of the prehistoric-looking Hoatzins. These are easy to observe and also photograph from the paddled canoes.

After returning for a late breakfast, we set off into the cool understory of the tall virgin forest near the lake to see some towering wild Brazil Nut trees and a demonstration of how our hosts collect, open and commercialize this important natural product.

After lunch and an hour or so to relax, we once again board the canoe to explore the eastern part of the lake, where we might see one or more of the five species of monkeys who live in the forest near the lake, such as the Brown Capuchin Monkey and Squirrel Monkey.

We will leave after dinner to try and spot some Black Caimans on the lake, or to go on a short night walk through the primary forest. (B, L, D)

DAY 4: CLAY LICK IN PALM TREE / LAKE SANDOVAL / JUNGLE WALKING / SWIMMING IN THE LAKE / SPOTTING WILDLIFE.

After a dawn breakfast, we will cross the lake by canoe and take a short walk into the interior of the Mauritia palm forest to stand beneath and closely view the impressive morning congregations. This place has a very interesting concentration of parrots, parakeets and large and small macaws that can be observed using dead Mauritia palm trees. Some of them are resident nesters: Yellow-headed Parrot, Mealy Parrot, Blue-headed Parrot, Scarlet Macaw, Blue and Yellow Macaw, Red and Green Macaw, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Dusky-headed Parakeet, Red-bellied Macaw, Cobalt-winged Parakeet, Tui Parakeet.

Returning from the macaw show, we will cross the lake to explore a primary forest trail and admire the impressive ancient rainforest trees and lianas with our knowledgeable resident naturalist guide. As we walk, the forest will be brought to life as your guide explains the ecology of the rainforest and its diverse flora and fauna.

We return for lunch, and then will pack to go back to Puerto Maldonado.
