TOUR PLAN

01

DAY 1.- PUERTO MALDONADO TAMBOPATA / LODGE TAMBOPATA / JUNGLE WALKING / SEARCHING CAIMAN.

We will start in Tambopata Puerto Maldonado at 10:00 am. We can pass to pick you up from your hotel, bus station or airport. We will have 2 hour by car from Puerto Maldonado until Tambopata River near the limit to the National Reserve Tambopata. Our boat will be waiting for us to take us 25 minutes up stream the Tambopata river to get to our lodge, near to Chuncho Clay Lick, we will have good chances to spot capybaras and many shore birds along the river bank. Getting to the lodge we will get a welcome drink and the manager will explain us all we need to know about our lodge and its around. After lunch we will go for an introductory walk, first in a secondary grow forest and then in a primary forest full of huge trees and lianas and vines, at the same time we will talk about the most important economic activities in this region. Chances to spot Howler Monkeys, wild pigs “peccaries” , some Brown capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys will be always possible. When is getting dark we will come back to our lodge to get our torch and go to our boat and we will do one of the most exciting activities… it will be Cayman spotting, we will go to look for White and black Caymans “alligators” along the river bank with a big spot light, we might see more capybaras and we always have good chances to spot an ocelot or a jaguar along the river bank.

DAY 2 .- TAMBOPATA MACAW CLAY LICK / LUNCH TAMBOPATA / MAMMAL CLAY LICK TAMBOPATA / NIGHT WALKING TAMBOPATA.

We will wake up around 5:00 am, we will get a tea or coffee to get some energy and we will take our boat up the Tambopata river for 1 hour, crossing the check point. We will have the sunrise just for us in the boat, and we will have really good chances to spot capybaras (which is the largest rodent worldwide), tapir, and you could even see the most beautiful feline in South America – “The Jaguar”. Many of our clients are witnesses with photographic evidence of encounters with this beautiful mammal. I like to say it, we have a 20% probability to see one of these guys by the river bank.

Getting to our destination, The Tambopata clay lick, we will take a seat as close as we are allowed and we will get a show at the clay lick: parrots and macaws – green, red, blue and yellow birds all around us, flying and making loud noises. It will be spectacular – this behavior of these birds. We will explain to you the reason why every day the whole year around these birds go to the cliff to eat clay. We will spend from 6:30 am to 11:00 am approximately. Our breakfast will be in front of the Tambopata clay lick activity.

At the end of this activity, we will get back to our lodge where you can take a short break before lunch. In the afternoon, we will walk to the mammal clay lick. We will probably have better chances to find howler monkeys, deers, wild pigs “peccaries” , and some other mammal feeding around this place. At the same time we will explain to you the different techniques about the hunting ways that exist in this area.

We will go back to our lodge and then before dinner or after dinner we will have a short night walk. The sounds at night, the wildlife at night – insects, spiders, tarantulas, frogs, armadillos and maybe even snakes – will make this activity something difficult to forget.

DAY 3.- PUERTO MALDONADO TAMBOPATA/ NATIONAL RESERVE TAMBOPATA / SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE / SEARCHING WILD LIFE.

After a hearty breakfast, our boat takes us to the port and our bus will take us back to Puerto Maldonado and transfer to the port where we will take another boat for an hour until Sandoval Lake port. From here the trail takes you on a 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) walk through secondary forest, until we reach a small canal where we board canoes and we will go across half the lake to the lodge.

After lunch and a brief rest to avoid the early afternoon heat, we once again board our canoe and set off to explore the entire west end of the lake. Here, in the flooded palm forest we drift to the sounds of hundreds of Red-Bellied Macaws as they return to the palm forest for the night. This macaw species is found locally in parts of the Amazon, always living in flooded palm forests such as the beautiful palm stand at Sandoval Lake. At 500-800 birds, this flock of macaws at Sandoval Lake is currently the largest reported in the world for this highly-specialized macaw.

As night falls we will look for the large and extremely rare Black Caimans. If it is a clear starlit night, we will also be able to float in the middle of the lake to marvel at the brilliance of the sky and listen to the sounds of the forest.

We return to the lodge for dinner. At any point, you could step out from the bar to admire the wide variety of nocturnal moths, beetles and praying mantises attracted to our black light in the lodge clearing. For those with lots of energy, our guide will take you on a short night walk into the forest behind the lodge.

DAY 4.- SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE / JUNGLE WALKING / SEARCHING WILDLIFE.

A pre-dawn wake-up call will enable us to be on the lake for sunrise and a hopeful encounter with the family of Giant Otters who frequent the lake and are most active at this time of day. Sandoval Lake offers abundant wildlife including over 40 species of birds resident to its lake margins. Most of the fish-eating water birds around the lake actively fish in the early morning as well, and this outing should provide excellent views of the prehistoric-looking Hoatzins. These are easy to observe and also photograph from the paddled canoes.

After returning for a late breakfast, we set off into the cool understory of the tall virgin forest near the lake to see some towering wild Brazil Nut trees and a demonstration of how our hosts collect, open and commercialize this important natural product.

After lunch and an hour or so to relax, we once again board the catamaran to explore the eastern part of the lake, where we might see one or more of the five species of monkeys who live in the forest near the lake, such as the Brown Capuchin Monkey and Squirrel Monkey.

We will leave after dinner to try and spot some Black Caimans on the lake, or to go on a short night walk through the primary forest.

DAY 5: SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE / JUNGLE WALKING / SWIMMING IN THE LAKE / SPOTTING WILDLIFE

Before breakfast, depending on your flight or bus, we could make a short walk around the lodge. We’ll have a chance to see many birds and some monkeys. After breakfast, we will pack to go back to Puerto Maldonado.
